Award-winning conservation photographer Garth Lenz

to lecture at Royal BC Museum

Victoria, BC - Garth Lenz's emotionally-charged TEDx Talk, The True Cost of
Oil, earned more than 530,000 views, and now the internationally renowned
photographer is coming to the Royal BC Museum to share the stories behind
his photographs.

The guest lecture on Thursday, March 13 complements the 2013 Wildlife
Photographer of the Year exhibition currently on display at the Royal BC
Museum. Lenz is the 2013 runner-up in the World in Our Hands category for
his dramatic aerial image "Oil spoils," which shows the massive scale and
size of the Alberta tar sands.

Based in Victoria, Lenz - a classically trained pianist - left the world of
classical music to pursue photography. For the past 20 years he has produced
thought-provoking images that capture the impact of industrialization on
fragile ecosystems. His photographs have appeared in the world's leading
publications, from Time magazine to the New York Times, The Guardian,
Esquire and Canadian Geographic.

Lenz's recent work from the boreal region of Canada set in motion
large-scale conservation campaigns that helped lead to new protected
wilderness regions in the Northwest Territories, Quebec and Ontario. He has
also won major awards in the Prix de la Photographie Paris, and is one of
only 60 photographers worldwide to be named a Fellow of the International
League of Conservation Photographers.

Join Garth Lenz for his guest lecture on Thursday, March 13 from 7 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. at the Clifford Carl Hall in the Royal BC Museum. Tickets are $16
per person available online or at the Royal BC Museum box office. Members
receive a 10% discount. Lecture ticket does not include access to the museum
galleries.

The 2013 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition features 100
photographs in 18 categories that are displayed in sleek backlit
installations. Each image is accompanied by a caption written by the
photographer, along with technical details including camera, lens, aperture
and exposure. The exhibition closes April 6.
