Paper, Art, and the Book

An exhibition by BC members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists
Guild (CBBAG)

The crafts of bookbinding, hand papermaking, letterpress printing and all
kinds of printmaking and paper surface decoration are being practised by
growing numbers of poets, designers, and makers of all kinds who want relief
from the digital and the virtual when it comes to images and words. 

They are drawn to the book arts by a variety of needs: some to communicate
in ways that stay within the traditional concepts of the book, others in
ways that explore and push beyond the boundaries of the familiar.

Paper, Art, and the Book shows the work of 14 craftspeople from British
Columbia with distinct approaches to their craft: some bringing expertise in
printmaking, others in calligraphy, surface decoration, or fine binding. All
are members of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (CBBAG), a
national organization with 650 members. 

This exhibit is designed to show what we make, what we have learned, and
what we can teach or share, and is intended as a companion to the
international CBBAG Art of the Book 2013 exhibition at the University of
British Columbia Library (Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, April-May,
2014). Art of the Book 2013 features an wide range of interpretations of
"the book" which employ historical craft skills as well as distinctly modern
ones.
