Revelstoke Railway Museum
The Revelstoke Railway Museum is recognized as one of the best railway
museums in the Canada, presenting excellent exhibitions on the impact and
challenges of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the mountains of British Columbia.
The Museum's mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history, heritage,
and significance of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company within the region, for
the education, enlightenment, and inspiration of present and future generations.
In addition to the Museum facilities located in downtown Revelstoke, the Society
also operates a gift store and interpretive center at Craigellachie, the site where the
Last Spike was driven on November 7, 1885.
Position Description:
Under the direction of the Operations and Retail Managers, you will provide friendly and responsive visitor services in the museum, the gift shop, in collection information requests and especially in your direct participation in summer events and group tour activities initiated by the museum. You will be expected to work independently as well as with other staff members and volunteers. You will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of visitor services as required, including front desk admissions, gift shop sales, and museum orientation and interpretation. You will be expected to take the lead in addressing inquiries related to the museum's artifact, archival and library collections. In addition, you will provide administrative and communication support to the implementation of events and scheduled group tours. At all times, you maintain a work area that is clean and organized and you put the visitor first in all tasks and duties. Position offers 40 hours per week beginning as soon as possible and ending on or around August 30, 2014.
Key responsibilities:
- Assists the Operations Manager and other staff with collection organization, administration, queries, item donations, and item documentation.
- Assists the Operations and Retail Managers with museum display, promotions, gift shop sales, communication, and administration related to special event planning and group tours.
- Works cooperatively will all staff and volunteers to coordinate implementation of regular and special activities related to events and the needs of tour groups.
- Supports evaluation measures for visitor services and events; generates documentation and statistics for future planning; organizes photograph collection from event activities for future promotional purposes; keeps files and records updated on a computer database.
- Ensures a neat and tidy work place
- Enhances visitor experience by being helpful, cheerful, and attentive in whatever task is being performed in the museum.
Minimum Grade 12
- Self-motivated, organized, and experienced in meeting and exceeding visitors needs and expectations in the customer service and tourism industry
- Excellent communication skills in the English language
- Ability to use a variety of computer software programs including databases, spreadsheets, digital photograph editing, etc.; and searching the internet
- Outgoing personality and enjoys dealing directly with the public and as part of a team
- Respectful in dealing with museum collection items and their donors
- Flexible and works well under pressure
- Must be available to work weekends, public and statutory holidays and some evenings.
Compensation: $12.00 per hour. Free parking.
