/"The art and knowledge in this exhibition is simply incredible, but
perhaps even more exceptional is the generosity and trust of those
who've shared their personal treasures and stories with us all. These
are not just pieces of art -- they tell of one's history, one's way of
life, one's way of knowing."/

//

/Gina suuda tl'l _x_asii ~ Came to tell something/features a wide range
of historical and contemporary traditional Haida art created for and
used within Haida society. Poised to educate and inspire through a
visually stimulating and culturally intimate sharing of Haida art and
culture, this exhibition//promises to make an important and lasting
contribution to the preservation and continuation of Haida art and its
role within Haida society.

In its social function, Haida art -- both visual and performance -- is a
companion to our Haida language, it "comes to tell something" --
recording and communicating history from the time of the supernatural
through to events of today; conveying family lineage, social standing,
and relationships with others; expressing our connection to the
supernatural and affirming our inseparable relationship to, and
dependency upon, the lands and waters of Haida Gwaii. It also serves an
important economic function within our nation.

Curated by Nika Collison under the guidance of Haida artists and
scholars Evelyn Vanderhoop, Isabel Rorick, Robert Davidson, James Hart
and Guujaaw, the exhibition//consists of an amazing and rare array of
ancestral treasures from the early 1800s through to the time of Bill
Reid, alongside the works of over 35 contemporary artists -- emerging to
master -- who have shared their knowledge and experience in the
construction, use, traditions and spiritual connections of our numerous
Haida art forms.

An accompanying publication, released later this summer, expands upon
the knowledge, stories and artworks in the exhibition and features
additional pieces of cultural significance such as monumental poles,
canoes and rare ancestral treasures held elsewhere.

Planned programming includes artist talks, roundtable discussions,
storytelling, sharing of Haida song, opportunities to witness artists in
the midst of their creations and more. /Gina suuda tl'l _x_asii ~ //Came
to tell something/provides multiple layers of access to knowledge and
inspiration for new, emerging, senior and master artists and offers the
general public a personal and visually stimulating glimpse into Haida
art and culture.
