Writing seminar for aspiring lifewriters
Fraser Valley residents who want to write their life stories can kick-start
the process at an all-day lifewriting seminar on November 22, 9:30-3:30 p.m.
at the MSA Museum (Trethewey House) in Abbotsford. Participants will
identify strategies for completing the four-step writing process, explore
the principles of creative non-fiction, and gain an understanding of thorny
issues such as how much truth and dealing with trauma. The seminar is
co-sponsored by the MSA Museum Society and local writer / editor Philip
Sherwood and costs $50.00.
"We have held two general information sessions on lifewriting, and each of
them was packed," said Dorothy van der Ree, Executive Director of the MSA
Museum Society. "Obviously people want to write their stories, and so we
hope this seminar will help equip them with the necessary skills to get
going."
Free parking is available for the event at the Museum at 2313 Ware Street.
Van der Ree emphasizes that seating is limited, and advance registration is
mandatory. For more information and to register and receive a syllabus,
contact the Museum at 604.853.0313 or by email at info at msamuseum.ca, or
visit www.msamuseum.ca.
Leading the November 22 seminar is Abbotsford writer / editor / personal
historian Philip Sherwood, whose company lifewriters.ca specialises in
helping individuals, families, organisations, and communities tell and
preserve their stories in book form. Philip recently won the Abbotsford Arts
Council 2014 Arty Award for Outstanding Artist in the Literary Arts.
The seminar is one of several services that the MSA Museum offers to
aspiring memoirists, lifewriters, and family historians. These include free
information sessions held three times a year, free one-on-one consultations,
a list of do-it-yourself resources, and several fee-based services.
