VANCOUVER MARITIME MUSEUM PARTNERS WITH HMCS DISCOVERY IN NEW EXHIBIT
EXPLORING BC’s NAVAL HISTORY
OPENING November 27, 2014
VANCOUVER, BC (November 2014) — On display November 27, 2014 – Spring
2015, the Vancouver Maritime Museum invites the public to explore the Royal
Canadian Navy (RCN), from its inception in 1910 to today and its
contributions to our local history.
Western Waters: The Royal Canadian Navy On Our Coast, is a creative
partnership with the Naval Museum at HMCS Discovery, and examines British
Columbia’s contributions to the RCN past and present through artifacts,
stories, and photography.
The Vancouver Maritime Museum is proud to share the stories that helped to
shape our Navy’s first century.
Western Waters: The Royal Canadian Navy On Our Coast is a journey through
the individual stories, strategic operations and accomplishments of our
local RCN during the wars of the 20th century and its purpose and impact
today.
ABOUT HMCS DISCOVERY
HMCS Discovery is a Royal Canadian Navy Reserve division and shore facility
based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Created during World War II from the
Vancouver Half Company of the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve, HMCS
Discovery was used for recruitment and training, and provided almost 8,000
personnel during the war. HMCS Discovery continued in its training role
following the war, and also serves as headquarters for several Reserve and
Cadet units.
Because the base is landlocked and not an actual sea-going ship it is by
Naval tradition called a “stone frigate. The stone frigate takes its name
from HMS Discovery, the ship used by George Vancouver to chart most of
North America's north-western coast. Originally based at the Stanley Park
Barracks, in 1944 Discovery moved to its current location on Deadman's
Island, in Coal Harbour, adjacent to Stanley Park.
HMCS Discovery has a crew of about 175 officers and non-commissioned
members.
ABOUT THE VANCOUVER MARITIME MUSEUM
The Vancouver Maritime Museum is a not-for-profit museum and gallery that
celebrates the profound significance of the oceans and waterways of the
Pacific and Arctic, through the preservation and growth of its
extraordinary collection, and as a centre for dialogue, research, and
experience.
