Hi Julie,

If there is any way that you can eek out some time to volunteer at an organization that you would love to work for, I would put this high on your list. I realize that in your position it may not be feasible, but even a few days a month will get you in the door. If a position should arise, then the organization will already be familiar with the great work that you do. If a Masters isn’t in the cards, consider either diploma or one-off courses with a program like Cultural Resource Management at UVIC. Here, you will diversify your portfolio of skills like Louise mentioned, as well as meet many other folks in the field.

Good luck Juile, we will see you out there!

Julie,

Apply everywhere, get yourself known in Vancouver and elsewhere, and be willing to relocate if at all possible. The task at hand – employment in the museum field – can take time, but don’t give up. You can move forward by adding to your portfolio of skills – marketing, interpretation, fundraising, grant writing, budgeting – that will sell you out there. Being a generalist can often have great results. A Master’s is also an important option that you might want to consider being that the field is so competitive now, and you can often come in second in the interview process because that other person has that Master’s. Just some thoughts on the topic of a career in museums.

Good luck!

Subject: [BCMA] Advice

Hello all,

I hope I have done this right, it is my first time posting to a listserve.

I am looking for advice on finding a job in a museum. I graduated from university last December with a degree in archaeology with a minor in museum and heritage studies. I would really like to work with artifacts again curating and researching. I am just unsure how to break into the museum scene. I do not qualify for YWC employment so the only experience I have at the moment is my practicum and field school I did for my degree. I wish I had time for lots of volunteer work, but as I now live in Vancouver I am working full time and I do volunteer work for my daughter so my time is limited.

I could really use some advice on what avenues any of you may have taken to have gotten any sort of entry level work in a museum.

Thank you so much,

Julie Thomas
