Culture Days Events at VPAG

Poetry Reading, Artist Talk & Open Discussion

Friday September 26, 2014 @ 7:00pm to 9:00pm

"We are pleased to be able to offer two diverse Culture Days events this
year at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Join us for an open discussion on the
first Nations colonial legacy in Canada on Friday September 26th or bring
the family to VPAG on Saturday afternoon to participate in Aboriginal Dot
Painting for this month's free Family Saturday."

VPAG proudly presents Culture Days 2014.  Join us for two diverse events on
September 26th and 27th at the Vernon Public Art Gallery.

On Friday evening join us for a poetry reading, artist talk and open
discussion on First Nations Peoples perspective on the past and present with
Margo Tamez (Lipan Apache), Mariel Belanger (Sylix), Garry Gottfriedson
(Secwepemc), and Nigit'stil Norbert (Gwich 'In).  Margo Tamez, Mariel
Belanger, Garry Gottfriedson will share poetry, and thoughts on the current
state of First Nations Peoples in Canada and British Columbia.  Nigit'stil
Norbert is one of the artists featured in the current exhibition Decolonize
Me.  Nigit'stil Norbert is visiting from Yellowknife and will give an artist
talk on her contributions to the exhibition Decolonize Me.  This event is
open to the public from 7pm to 9pm at the Vernon Public Art Gallery,
admission is by donation.   Light refreshments, coffee and tea will be
served.

"As a poet, Indigenous rights activist, and scholar, I feel deeply connected
to the subject matter being addressed by these artists, and as a Lipan
Apache residing in the unseeded Okanagan territory, these artists are
teaching me a history that has been hidden from society.  I'm deeply
connected to these ideas and have deep respect for the materials that these
artists are utilizing to foreground sensitive and diverse messages.  Kama?
Aboriginal Arts Collective and Decolonize Me exhibits, which are two
distinct shows happening concurrently, bring important and critical
perspectives to how individuals, and a society, can re-think the past and
present vis-a-vis Indigenous peoples' lenses.  Sensitive and necessary
issues are being addressed here, which touch on human experiences transcend
borders, boundaries, and memory."

Culture Days Events at VPAG

Family Saturday, Aboriginal Dot Painting

Saturday September 27, 2014 @ 1:00pm to 3:30pm

This month at Family Saturday we will be learning about Aboriginal Dot
Painting as a part of Culture Days.  Join us from 1:00pm to 3:30pm at the
Vernon Public Art Gallery and learn how to paint using dots, inspired by
Australian Aboriginal Art. This is a fun project for children ages 5 +.
Parents can get involved and paint too.  All materials supplied, just come
ready to paint and have fun.  This month Family Saturday is FREE to
participate in as it is a Culture Days registered activity.
