FRASER RIVER DISCOVERY CENTRE UNVEILS NEW EXPERIENCE THE FRASER EXHIBIT
"Celebrates Urban Portal at New Westminster"

New Westminster, BC - The Fraser River Discovery Centre (FRDC) proudly unveils its new Experience the Fraser exhibit Saturday, September 27 during RiverFest. Working in collaboration with Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District, the FRDC created a fun, interactive, mini riverine trail system that promotes the recreation opportunities and unique cultural experiences the Lower Fraser River corridor has to offer. The exhibit aims to send visitors on their way to Experience the Fraser.

The indoor trail transports visitors to the scenic shore of the Mighty Fraser and invites them to get on a bike, portage a voyageur canoe or simply experience the joy of a walk through the woods. Complete with tree canopy, projections, oversized floor maps and murals, the exhibit inspires people to get outdoors and start exploring.

The exhibit promotes the Canyon to Coast trail and blueway components of the Experience the Fraser (ETF) project. ETF is a vision to connect the Lower Fraser River from Hope to the Salish Sea by means of over 640 kilometres of trail and via the river itself. The founding partners are the Province of BC, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley Regional District.

"The intention is to connect communities to each other and to the river, to knit together points of interest such as parks, natural features, historic and cultural sites and festivals - and to continue to build on that recreation and tourism network, creating one of the world's greatest river destinations" explains Maple Ridge-Mission MLA, Marc Dalton, provincial member of the project's steering committee.

The project has designated its Eastern Portal at Hope and the Western Portal at Tsawwassen. The City of New Westminster has been designated as the Urban Portal for the project. The FRDC, located at the heart of the New Westminster's waterfront, is the perfect venue to bring awareness, educate and encourage visitors to experience the natural beauty and opportunities of the Fraser River.

"The goals of the ETF project align perfectly with FRDC's vision to connect communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser River." says Catherine Ouellet-Martin, FRDC Executive Director. "We are very pleased to see the ETF project develop and this new exhibit reminds us all that despite the very industrial nature of much of the Lower Fraser, there is still a wide variety of choices for urban and rural enjoyment of trails along the corridor".

The Experience the Fraser exhibit was made possible by funding from the Province of BC through the ETF Regional Partners - Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District - the Pacific Parklands Foundation and in-kind contributions from the New Westminster Museum and Archives and Cap's Bicycle.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society operates the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Through interactive exhibits and engaging programming, the Discovery Centre showcases the Fraser River's role in shaping BC's ecological, cultural and economic diversity. Its mission is to be the Voice of the Fraser in presenting the stories of the Fraser River and their contribution to the life, history and future of British Columbia with the vision of connecting communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser River. The Discovery Centre is currently open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Admission to the exhibit galleries is by donation.
