[BCMA] Built City @MOV Speaker Series: Fashioning Performance: Fabric and Urban Form: September 24th

The 2014/2015 Built City @MOV speaker series kicks off with a talk that coincides with the inaugural Vancouver Design Week and showcases the potential of design to effect significant change in personal and public space. Fashioning Performance is a new way of looking at design process. It transcends the modernist maxim of "form follows function." Instead, it explores the reciprocal relationship between beauty, utility, and design agency by asking: what are the limits of potential? The goal is an empowering design principle that can be employed across scales-from our cities and buildings down to our own bodies and minds.

Confirmed speakers:

Alexandra Plante-inventor, material engineer, and project design lead for Lululemon's newly created Whitespace Innovation Workshop-will share her insights into the potential of fashioning performance. Plante will discuss innovations in textiles, performance wear, and the design of immersive lab environments, highlighting how each serves to creatively redefine and enhance the capabilities and performance of individuals and groups. She will be joined in conversation by an innovative thinker from the realm of architecture.

Christopher Sharples is a Principal of SHoP Architects and SC | SHoP Construction, and a registered architect in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Washington D.C., and is NCARB Certified. Christopher holds Bachelor of History and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees from Dickinson College, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, where he graduated with honors for Excellence in Design. Christopher has served as a Louis I. Kahn Assistant Visiting Professor for Architectural Design at Yale University's School of Architecture, and has also taught at Cornell University, Parsons School of Design, City College, Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and the University of Virginia.

Moderator:

Edward Ozimek brings to the design table a rich background based in the art of making. Prior to his architectural studies, he was for 10 years lead Project Manager at Casgrain Developments where he oversaw the development and construction of some 250,000+ square feet of residential and institutional space. He has since then endeavoured to marry the pragmatic concerns of real world built environments with the conceptual underpinnings of a thoughtful architectural practice. Immediately following his studies at UBC School of Architecture, Edward worked with award winning architects both in Canada and the United States (Patkau Architects - Vancouver, Leroy Street Studio - New York) and is currently employed with RUF Project.

Built City @MOV is an annual trio of visually animated conversations, during which city-shaping ideas converge and collide. Thinkers and doers from architecture, planning, design, and other disciplines help us imagine the future of Vancouver.

This year we examine fashion, fabrication, and futures in design and architecture. Where is the line between fashion and innovation? How do the materials we use influence the act of creation in clothing, landscape, and architecture? How do past notions of the future live on and enrich our experience of today's city?
