Hello Jon,
I used to live in Princeton many, many years ago and am now the manager of the Qualicum Beach Museum on Vancouver Island. We have here a similar situation where the museum buildings/land are owned by the town and we are covered under their general insurance. However we do have our own insurance for liability, equipment, fixtures and some contents. A far as I understand, insuring museum collections can be quite complex as the value of certain items would be rather difficult to assess due to the fact they are rare items and no longer available for replacement. Furthermore, we do have particular collections (fossil collection) that were donated to the museum and in order to grant a tax receipt, these were appraised by knowledgeable individuals.
I would also be happy to share with you the job description for the manager’s position here at the QB Museum. Please contact me directly: qbmuseum at shaw.ca.
I hope this is of some help to you.
All the best,
Netanja Waddell

Subject: [BCMA] Princeton Museum Requests Help
Dear Colleague:
I write to you today as a Director of the Princeton & District Museum & Archives to ask for your assistance with some aspects of museum management. Briefly, our Museum has undergone dramatic changes in structure and design, and we are looking at parallel changes in our organization.
The areas where we need help are in a job description and a model contract for our manager, as well as questions as to the ownership and insurance of our collection.
Our building is owned by the Town and we are checking into whether the physical building is insured. What is the standard practice of other museums regarding insurance of their collections? Do other museums typically insure their collections? And if so, how are such collections typically valued?
Any help you could give us with these matters would be greatly appreciated.
Jon Bartlett
Director, Princeton & District Museum & Archives
