Hi Scott,

Thanks for your message to the BCMA Listserv about deaccessioning! While we
are on this topic I thought I'd let you and anyone else who may be
interested know that we are running a deaccessioning talk on Tuesday October
27 from 6:30pm-8:20pm at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. I've added the
information below. Perhaps this session might be helpful in answering some
of your questions.

Best regards,

Theresa

The Duty, Documentation & Dilemmas of Deaccessioning

Deacessioning is the permanent removal of materials from a collection. It is
an important part of a comprehensive collections management program. Once an
object has been accessioned as part of a museum's permanent collection, its
removal from that collection requires a careful documented procedure of
deaccessioning. The policy is a guideline that should state under what
circumstances are permissible, what acceptable methods of disposition are
stated, how any proceeds will be handled, the authority required and the
records that need to be maintained.

Lana Panko has had over 20 years of experience with the process of
deaccessioning including formulating policy, identifying materials,
documentation, approval processes and selection of disposal, transfer,
auction methods. This session will cover the professional standards and how
this may vary depending upon the institution, steps involved in the process,
ethical and legal implications and several case studies.

Subject: [BCMA] Deaccessioning Policy Development Question

My institution is currently in the process of reviewing our deaccessioning
policy and I was wondering if anyone on the listserv had additional
information about statues and regulations governing deaccessioning outside
of the Heritage Conservation Act and the Cultural Heritage Import and Export
Act.

I was also wondering if anyone had resources that they would recommend
related to creating a deaccessioning policy in addition to the Collections
Management
<http://museumsassn.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/BP-2-Collections-Manage
ment.pdf> component of the Best Practices Module on BCMA`s website,
especially resources that outline legal considerations for public
institutions in British Columbia.

Best,

Scott Owens
