[BCMA] Municipal support for Museums

Hi Diana and Colleen,

 

Here at the Bulkley Valley Museum in Smithers (about 5600 people), we apply annually for funding through the Town of Smithers “Grant in Aid” program (http://www.smithers.ca/municipal-hall/financial-services/grant-in-aid-information). Part of that funding comes from the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako. In the past few years we received about $70,000-72,000 through the GIA, but in 2015 we received $67,000. 

 

Our 2 full time employees are not municipal employees. We pay rent to another organization for our gallery and office space, (a Society that manages the historic building we’re currently housed in), which was approximately $13,000 last year. We have space offsite where some collections are stored that we lease from the Town for $1/year, and are responsible for insuring. We also manage a community events facility in a historic building called the Old Church, which the Town owns, but that we lease and then rent to community groups on an hourly basis, again for $1/year.  While we retain any revenues we generate by renting the space out as an events hall, we are responsible for all costs associated with maintenance and upkeep of the facility, interior and exterior.

Hello Diana,

Golden Museum would also be interested in this information and we are happy to share our info. We are a community of 3800 and receive joint funding from the Town of Golden and Columbia Shuswap Regional District Area A in the amount of $54,000. annually. From the Town of Golden we also receive tax exemption for our property. Can I add to the question? Do any of these museums have employees who are employed by the Town?

Our board of directors is wondering how much if any, municipal support Museums in small communities receive as a yearly grant, or is the Museum funded by the municipality? Our community is approximately 2500 and we would like to compare notes on this with similarly sized Villages.
