*The Artist Collective Instant Coffee creates *an exhibition from the *Nikkei
National Museum’s* Collection.

The Instant Coffee Artist Collective is taking an unexpected and innovative
look at the gems from the Nikkei National Museum collection.*Magic Hour* is
the time just after sunrise or just before sunset, and we are excited to
tease out the magic in the archives.

This is the first time that Instant Coffee has been afforded the
opportunity to work with an historic collection. These collections are the
legacy of the many people of Japanese descent who have made Canada their
home since the 1800s. Rather than a static and regimented exhibit, Instant
Coffee brings their collaborative, interactive and often mischievous
approach to make the usually hidden activities of collection management
into a publicly accessible event.

Instant Coffee says: “It is a privilege to have access to these archives:
filing through images, listening to cassette tapes, watching VHS recorded
interviews and unwrapping the numerous eclectic objects. We are fascinated
by the process of recording and archiving and wanted to give the varied
approaches of documentation and preserving a performative element. “

Director/Curator Beth Carter commented: “This is our chance to take a fresh
approach to showcase the wonderful treasures from our collection while also
retaining historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity. We are grateful to
receive the BC Arts Council Innovations Grant to support the development of
the partnership with Instant Coffee. By showcasing our Nikkei collection
through the creativity of a non-Nikkei collective, we broaden our
opportunities for innovation and an explosion of creative expression.”

The exhibit will continue to change through the course of the show, with a
series of events which will invite interaction and intervention from the
community. The public is encouraged to visit and revisit the exhibition to
help provide direction or to see the changes made.

*BIOGRAPHY*

*Instant Coffee* is a service oriented artist and curatorial collective
based in Winnipeg and Vancouver, founded in 2000. As a collective we
developed, in part, as a response to the exaggerated division between
studio and exhibition practice. Through formal installations and
event-based activities, we have built a practice that centers on providing
a public place to practice, where ideas, materials and actions can be
explored outside the isolated studio and in a manner that renegotiates
traditional exhibition structures, but is still supported by them. As an
artist and curatorial collective we have been invested in combining the
social with the aesthetic, and as such have worked in public spaces to
engage larger audiences. We have shown internationally and have exhibited
in many prominent art institutions as well as produced numerous Public Art
projects. Instant Coffee’s current List of Members: Jinhan Ko, Khan Lee,
Kelly Lycan, and Jenifer Papararo.
