NEW 6-day COURSE: Intangible Cultural Heritage
6-day on campus offering at the University of Victoria; Sep 28- Oct 3, 2015
Join instructor Dale Jarvis, Folklorist and Intangible Cultural Heritage Development Officer for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, for this new course.
Description: While museums and other heritage agencies have long worked to preserve the tangible evidence of our past and present, they are sometimes challenged with the idea of saving less tangible aspects of our heritage: traditional practices and knowledge systems, religious and social customs, languages, oral histories and stories, and cultural values and perspectives. This course explores contemporary practices and policies inspired by and working with the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Topics covered will include:
* the nature and value of intangible cultural heritage
* the significant challenges associated with safeguarding and interpreting these resources
* hands-on approaches to ethnographic documentation
* ideas for taking intangible concepts and turning them into practical approaches and projects.
The course will guide you through what intangible cultural heritage can mean for your community, and will give colourful examples of how organizations locally and internationally are working to safeguard living heritage.
* Credit program and non-credit professional development registration options are available.
