Period of employment:  May 11 - August 28, 2015 (16 weeks)

Hours:                                   9:30 am – 5pm Wednesday to Sunday

Salary:                                   $13.50 per hour



The mandate of the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC) is to
preserve and promote Japanese Canadian history, arts and culture through
vibrant programs and exhibits that connect generations and inspire diverse
audiences. Currently the collections include more than 5000 photographs,
350 oral history recordings, 35 metres of archival and textual materials,
and over 2000 artifacts.


Job description:

The Museum Programs Assistant, under direction from the museum staff, will
assist with monitoring the gallery and museum shop, event planning and
production of public programs in the Nikkei National Museum, including
development of an outreach exhibit for local festivals, and planning and
implementation of the annual youth summer camp, walking tours, and special
community events, including Nikkei Matsuri, our major end-of-summer
festival. Occasional evenings and weekends required.



The Assistant must be organized and detailed oriented and will perform
other related duties as required. The Assistant will acquire skills in
museum standards and policy, exhibit planning, community outreach,
educational programs, event coordination, marketing and social media,
database software, and research procedures. They will gain strategic
planning, problem solving and leadership skills under direction of museum
staff. The setting will provide experience in cultural diversity, working
as a team, working collaboratively with other programs and exhibitions, and
the importance of preserving history for future generations.


Skills required

Student in the field of education, communications, history, museum studies,
asian studies, curatorial studies

Must be a current student between the ages of 16 and 30 and intend to
return to your studies in the fall.

Good level of computer literacy including spreadsheets, database software,
email.

Fluent in English, Japanese language would be an asset

Knowledge of Canadian History/Japanese Canadian History an asset

Must be a Canadian citizen

Current driver’s license and vehicle an asset

Candidates will be chosen on the basis of their skill level and ability,
