Project Title:
A Tale of Two Cities: The Love Letters of Morris Soskin of Vancouver and Rose Hyams of Montreal

Project Description:
The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia (JMABC), administered by the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC), is seeking an Archives Assistant for the digitization of the Morris Soskin and Rose Hyams collection. This project will commence May 4, 2015 and end August 6, 2015. As part of the mandate of the JMABC, the archives documents, acquires and preserves archival records, thereby safeguarding the history of the Jewish community of British Columbia.

The Morris Soskin and Rose Hyams collection [1920-1921] contains 59 cm of textual records and 15 photographs. There are 276 love letters which equals to a total of approximately 1,700 pages to be digitized.  Morris Soskin (1889/1890-1940) was a successful Vancouver lawyer. Morris met Rose Hyams (1896-1987) in Montreal at the beginning of 1921 when Morris went to Montreal to attend a Zionist meeting. They immediately fell in love and began a long-distance courtship by exchanging love letters. The love letters were all written between February and July of 1921 whereupon they were married in Montreal July 21, 1921.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate for the Archives Assistant at the JMABC will have:
-a demonstrated interest in working in an archival or heritage institution shown through previous volunteer or paid work experiences and/or an academic background in a related field such as history, anthropology, museum studies, library studies or archival studies. Preferences will be given to archival studies students;
-basic computer skills and will be comfortable working independently at a computer station. Experience working with databases such as AtoM (Access to Memory) will be considered an asset;
-experience with digitization and Adobe Photoshop will be considered an asset;
-experience with cataloguing and knowledge of Rules for Archival Description (RAD) will be considered an asset;
-excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
