Experimental Layers: Using Stitch & Collage to Create Dynamic Surfaces for Embroidery Workshop

This workshop will focus on constructing dynamic, textured, mixed media surfaces through the use of machine and hand embroidery. With the use of water soluble stabilizer, students will be encouraged to experiment with a variety of materials to create textured, embellished grounds where stitches hold the surface and materials together. Thin plastics, papers, yarns, threads and leaves can be used in this workshop. These constructed fabrics can be used for collages, wearable art pieces or grounds for more embroidery. Students will make a variety of samples exploring different texture and color combinations and will expand these tests into a larger piece in the form of a scarf or wall hanging depending on the student's interests.
