Curatorial Assistant (Richmond Art Gallery)
Job ID: 2015135 - Expression of Interest
$27.77 to $32.64 per hour + 12% in lieu of benefits
POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a contemporary art gallery position that involves working directly with the Curator and other Gallery staff on collection management, exhibitions, writing and research, administration and social media. Examples of key work activities:
* Maintain and update Richmond Art Gallery's collection database and hardcopy records including accession registers, donor files, artwork loans
* Mitigate threats to the collection by practicing preventative conservation and ensuring artworks are stored and displayed properly.
* Provide curatorial support for exhibitions that includes research and writing for exhibition development, publications, didactics, and information sheets.
* Provide administrative curatorial support for exhibitions that includes conducting condition reports, photographing artworks, liaising with artists, organizing and updating submissions, organizing and maintaining artist images and files, purchasing materials, receiving and shipping of artworks and assisting Preparators.
* Provide on and off site care when moving artworks.
* Provide curatorial support for the Gallery's outreach locations.
* Provide support in daily gallery operations.
* Provide administrative support in updating information on website and generating Social Media content - Facebook, Twitter.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement in a related discipline including curatorial studies, art history, and collections management. Up to and including 1 year of experience working with art collections with hands-on experience in a contemporary art gallery setting working directly with artworks, preventative conservation, research, legal and ethical issues is required. One to three years of related experience is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
* Knowledge of contemporary art institutions including industry methods, principles and national standards and guidelines.
* Knowledge of collections policy standards, preventative conservation and accessioning & de-accessioning procedures.
* Knowledge and skill in the care, handling, housing and preventative conservation of collections to ensure safety of artworks.
* Knowledge and skill in the area of photography in order to digitize various collections.
* Skill and ability to use a collections management database program - experience with Argus database system an asset.
* Skill and ability to use Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Photoshop programs.
* Skill and ability to update website and enter content in Facebook, Twitter.
* Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with Gallery, Cultural Centre and City staff, Richmond Art Gallery Association, artists and visitors.
* Ability to courteously and effectively deal with the public in providing information and assistance regarding the Richmond Art Gallery.
* Ability to prioritize competing demands, work well under pressure and deal with stressful situations with professionalism.
* Ability to follow direction and meet established deadlines.
* Ability to successfully pass a Criminal Record Check.
* Knowledge of Canadian and international contemporary art.
* Ability to communicate in Mandarin is considered an asset.
LICENCES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS
* Valid Class 5 Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia
WORKING CONDITIONS AND EFFORT
Work is performed in an environment with regular exposure to minor or occasional exposure to major disagreeable conditions or hazards that includes exposure to dust, paint, solvents and noise. Routine light lifting and occasional heavy lifting is required.
