EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Communications and Programming Coordinator (Internship)

*Gain valuable work experience with Yukon heritage organizations!*

*The Yukon Historical & Museums Association, the George Johnston Museum and
the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre are teaming up to provide an intensive
6.5-month internship. The intern will spend approximately 2 months with
each institution and undertake a variety of activities designed to increase
their understanding of how museum operations relate to one another and the
function of museums within a broader social and economic context. The
intern will gain practical experience in the areas of communications,
interpretation, exhibit development, and collections management as they are
exposed to daily museum operations and the overall activities of the Yukon
museums sector. Additional opportunities for professional development and
networking will be identified and explored with the successful candidate. *

*The ideal candidate will be a Canadian citizen who is an unemployed or
underemployed post-secondary graduate (within the past 24 months) in museum
studies/museology, curatorial or collections studies, art studies,
conservation, arts administration, heritage conservation, communication,
education or a related field of study. The successful candidate will have
experience in the management and operation of a cultural organization,
conservation, planning, program development, collections management,
communications or a combination of these. Candidates do not require
experience in all tasks included in the internship, but should be
self-motivated, well-organized, able to multi-task and enjoy learning. *

*The ideal candidate is a engaged, energetic individual who is looking for
an intensive, iterative early career experience. As the successful
candidate will be interacting with the public and stakeholders, strong
interpersonal skills and a friendly disposition are considered strong
assets. *

*Candidates should be comfortable working in small towns, and be open to
and respectful of cultural sensitivities: the ideal candidate will
appreciate this opportunity to gain a better understanding of Tlingit
culture and living and working in remote northern communities. *

*Candidates will require excellent computer skills, specifically Word,
Excel and online research capabilities. Familiarity with database
operation, social media and website management is considered an asset,
however training will be provided. *

*The internship will take place in Whitehorse and Teslin: candidates should
have access to a vehicle for the duration of their internship. Candidates
must reside in either the Whitehorse or Teslin area, or be willing to
relocate to both communities for the duration of the internship. Assistance
in locating housing and transportation will be provided. *

*The internship welcomes participation from equity groups and is an equal
opportunity employer. As this position is funded through the Young Canada
