Royal BC Museum invites kids and kids-at-heart to fun, new programs

VICTORIA, BC – Museums may seem like serious business, but two upcoming events at the Royal BC Museum will provide fun and laughter aplenty for kids of all ages.

A Kids’ Club creative writing course launching this month and a comedy night in November will show just how much merriment can be found in the museum and archives.

“We are really looking forward to showing families the wonder and fun that our collections offer,” says Chris O’Connor, Royal BC Museum’s Family and Schools Program Producer.

The six-week Kids’ Club Creative Writing Program, designed by the Royal BC Museum in partnership with local non-profit Story Studio Writing Society, kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 17 for youth ages 7-11.

This playful and engaging series of workshops will have Kids’ Club members thinking outside the box, as they explore Royal BC Museum galleries and go behind the scenes to find inspiration to write original stories. These young authors will let loose their imaginations as they create narratives through words and images, all while learning about points of view, writing methods, collective storytelling and much more.

Classes take place Saturdays, from Oct. 17 to Nov. 21, 2015 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Kids’ Club is a free members’-only program that introduces children to the museum and archival collections and exhibitions.

The new masterpieces created by the Kids’ Club members will be displayed at the Royal BC Museum’s comedy night, Early Shift: That’s Funny!, on Saturday, Nov. 27.

“I am particularly excited to see the creative writing students have their voices and ideas seen and heard by so many people at Early Shift: That’s Funny!” says O’Connor.

Early Shift will be a night of fun for all ages, with Royal BC Museum galleries filled with comedians and magicians. UVic School of Anthropology sound students will also be flexing their funny muscles and coming up with some new and interesting sounds for the event.

Early Shift: That’s Funny! runs from 6:30 to 10 p.m. and tickets are $10 per person, or $30 per family (up to 2 adults and 3 youth).
