See the Royal BC Museum in new ways with October events

VICTORIA, BC – There are many ways to explore and find inspiration in the Royal BC Museum, and many special October events to help guide you.

On Saturday, Oct. 3 Dr Maia Hoeberechts and Dr Dave Riddell from Ocean Networks Canada will share stories of adventures on the open ocean aboard scientific research vessels during the final instalment of the Floating Museum Series – Finding Museum Connections.

This lively and participatory discussion of the importance of what is found in the ocean will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the Royal BC Museum’s ocean-related research labs.

This free, family-friendly event starts at 1pm in Clifford Carl Hall.

This month’s Live @ Lunch on Wednesday, Oct. 7 will see author Vanessa Winn speaking on Women on the Edge of Gold. Learn about the elite family of Hudson’s Bay Company Chief Factor John Work, and in particular his daughter Margaret, as Winn reveals how the gold rush changed Victoria. All Live @ Lunch presentations are free.

Participants will be asked to open their ears and take in the complexity and richness of the soundscape of nature with the Natural History Soundwalk, on Saturday, Oct. 17. Composer and intermedia artists Tina Pearson and Paul Walde will lead an afternoon of sound exploration, guiding participants towards an intimate auditory appreciation of our environment – both in the Royal BC Museum’s Natural History gallery and outside, in Beacon Hill Park.

The Soundwalk starts at 1pm and is $20 per person.

Starting on Saturday, Oct. 17, Kids’ Club members have the chance to explore Royal BC Museum galleries and go behind the scenes in search of inspiration for the Creative Writing Program. The six-week course will focus on storytelling, with a variety of fun and eye-opening approaches.

Writing projects from the course will be shared during November’s Early Shift: That’s Funny event. Courses run 10:30am to 12pm every Saturday until November 21, excluding November 7.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, the Friends of the BC Archives presents James Cook: An Explorer for the Ages, a talk from Canadian Museums Association fellow and Cook expert Robin Inglis. This free event begins at 2:30pm in Newcombe Conference Hall.

October 25’s Wonder Sunday will explore how Halloween was celebrated a century ago, as Old Town becomes a place for tricks and treats. Costumes are encouraged and attendance is free with admission or membership.
