The Royal BC Museum rings in the New Year with exciting events
VICTORIA, BC-A new year means new, fun and thought-provoking programs and events at the Royal BC Museum.
>From January 2 to January 22, the Royal BC Museum plays host to a temporary exhibition, From Vimy to Juno, on loan from the Juno Beach Centre Association<https://www.junobeach.org/about-us/>, in partnership with the Vimy Foundation. The exhibition examines Canada's role in the First and Second World Wars, anchored on the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917 and the D-Day landings on Juno Beach in June 1944. From Vimy to Juno will be on display in Clifford Carl Hall, on the main floor of the museum.
January 2 also marks the beginning of Letter Writing Week, our salutation to that "old-fashioned" but tenacious form of communication. We will provide paper, pens, envelopes and even stamps to encourage visitors to stop by, sit down and pen a letter. Flex your fingers and practice your cursive in anticipation. Our writing booth will be set up every day on the third floor until January 8 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Our four Wonder Sunday events in January also turn to the written word. Using archival documents, we'll explore various ways of communicating and write a letter or two. Families are invited to join us for For the Love of Writing on January 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Attendance is included with admission or membership.
January's Live @ Lunch takes a look at BC Beaches: Life on the Shoreline. Join us at noon on January 11 in our recently refurbished Newcombe Conference Hall. Royal BC Museum curators Dr. Joel Gibson (Entomology) and Dr. Henry Choong (Marine Invertebrates) will speak about the bizarre and diverse animals found in BC's coastal habitats. No hip waders (or admission) required!
On the other hand, on January 14 you may wish to sport some decent boots as Drs. Gibson and Choong head out to the shoreline for the first in our popular Fieldtrippers series: Life on Marine Debris. Learn how natural and human-created marine debris interact with life in the marine and coastal environment. Meet at the Clover Point parking lot, off Dallas Road, at 10:00 am. Admission by donation.
Story time isn't just for kids. On January 21, experience the power of story in the cosy parlour of Helmcken House. This free event, called For the love of words - Stories Spoken Heart to Heart, is part of the Stories at Helmcken House series, where experienced tellers delight audiences of all ages with folktales, myths, legends and personal stories from around the world. Join us for an hour-long session at 2:00 or 3:00 pm.
