FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Outdoor Salmon Projections at National Historic Site in Steveston

Richmond, BC – The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site has
launched an exciting new presentation of artwork about salmon, projected
in large scale on the outside of its historic buildings.

On display starting February 29, 2016, the projection of the video Flow,by
artist Ruth Beer, beautifully weaves images of salmon spawning in the
Adams River with footage recorded in northwest British Columbia and
archival images of salmon canneries. The video combines the movement and
underwater environment of salmon, the transparent and reflective qualities
of water, and the dynamic flow of rivers.

The four-minute film is part of the exhibition Trading Routes: Rivers,
Fish and Oil currently showing at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National
Historic Site until March 9th, 2016. The exhibit focuses on the ecology
and cultural changes caused by industry and development along Northern
BC’s "grease trails”, the First Nations’ eulachon oil trading routes.

To mark the grand finale of the Trading Routes exhibit, Flow will be
projected on the outside of the Cannery building for the final two weeks
of the show. Passersby in Steveston can enjoy the artfully created piece,
which will be shown between 6 and 10pm each evening. Flow is part of the
research and creation project Trading Routes: Grease Trails, Oil Pipelines
led by artist/researcher Ruth Beer and supported by the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Special thanks to the Pacific
Salmon Foundation and 365 Productions for their support in this project.

Sponsored by the Georgia Straight, the exhibit shows daily from April 11,
2015 to March 9, 2016.
