Subject: [BCMA] Seeking Operating Model Information

Hello BCMA Community,

The City of Port Alberni has directed the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Heritage to investigate alternate operational and delivery models for the Alberni Valley Museum and related heritage programs. A community steering committee has been struck, and a first stage is to research how the museums and heritage programs are operated currently in other communities.

Attached please find a brief survey questionnaire in Word format, which can be filled out and submitted back to my e-mail address, or sent by post. We would greatly appreciate any input that would help to establish current best practices for museum and heritage operations, in the context of a relatively small community. Some of you may be contacted directly by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Heritage, if your community was already identified as corresponding well in size or situation to the City of Port Alberni.

We are most interested in responses from communities of similar size - the City of Port Alberni itself has about 16,600 people, and the regional district roughly 25,000. Currently the AV Museum is operated as a division of City government, within the City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Heritage. As well as the AV Museum itself, there is a very extensive City-owned industrial collection, which is housed off-site, but is considered part of the AV Museum collection. Maintenance, operation, and presentation of this collection relies on partnerships with a volunteer society, who operate within City-owned facilities. The AV Museum itself has a permanent full-time staff of three, and two part-time casual staff. The majority of our operating budget comes from the City of Port Alberni.

We would be extremely grateful for your responses, which would assist the City of Port Alberni to determine a sustainable model for operating a community museum, as well as maintaining its Industrial Collection. Please contact me by telephone or e-mail if you have any questions concerning this survey, and I will attempt to clarify.

Thanks, Jamie
