Registration underway for popular summer day camps at the Kelowna Art Gallery

June 1, 2016 - Kelowna, BC: Registration is underway for the Kelowna Art Gallery's summer art camps for children. Art Adventures camps are organized for preschool children ages 3 to 5, and two separate camps are offered for children ages 6 to 8, and ages 9 to 12. Full-day camps, half-day camps, and morning-only "mini camps" are scheduled Monday through Friday, beginning July 4 until August 26, 2016.

"Art Adventures is primarily about creating a fun, and interactive experience for engaging children and youth with art," says Laura Wyllie, Public Programming Coordinator at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "We know many of the kids will be tired of classrooms by summer, so we make sure our skilled instructors take the kids out on fun and exciting off-site trips to inspire their imaginations."

Leading the art camps and excursions to artists' studios, Kasugai Gardens, Waterfront Park, the beach, and nearby private galleries this year are two local artists and instructors, Asia Jong, and Victoria Moore.

Victoria Moore is entering her final year in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at UBC Okanagan, with a major in Visual Art and a minor in Art History. She is a past participant of the type of camps she will now be leading and brings more than eight years of experience with family programming. She looks forward to sharing her passion and fostering an environment where each child can be confident in expressing their individual creativity. Asia Jong is also a fourth-year UBCO student completing her BA with a concentration in art history. Originally from Armstrong, she has called the Okanagan home for her entire life. She is thrilled to be exciting children about art.

During the camps, children can expect to develop skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, and sculpture, while being inspired by the current exhibitions on view at the Gallery. Scheduled guest artists play a pivotal role at each of the camps, as they share their expertise with the children to help them develop a better understanding of art.

Class sizes for all of the Gallery's camps are limited, which allows for more one-on-one instruction and enriches the experience for all participants. All programs highlight skill-building and self-expression, as well as the introduction of new ideas and artistic techniques. Parents can have peace of mind knowing that their children will be spending their summer days with their peers in a nurturing and creative environment.

The cost for a week of Preschool Mini Camps (9 am-11 am) is $90.00 for the general public, and $75.00 for members of the Kelowna Art; a week of Half-Day Camps (9 am-12 pm) is $125.00, or $110.00 for members; and a week of Day Camps (9 am-3 pm) is $160.00, or $145.00 for members.
