Royal BC Museum March events include
zombie apocalypse preparation and genealogy basics
VICTORIA, BC – March events at the Royal BC Museum will have you preparing for a zombie invasion, searching your family history and learning to take photos like a pro.
You won’t find any preserved zombies in the Royal BC Museum’s collection, but the undead will be top of mind for Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse: Tools on March 9, part of a series of workshops looking to the past to help you prepare for the future.
From sharpening tools to mending clothing to building simple shelters, you never know when these once-common skills may come in handy again. Royal BC Museum Curator of Archaeology, Grant Keddie, will guide participants through making tools and knives, and sectioning bone, using examples from the archaeology collection.
On March 11 at 7 p.m., join Dr. Leslie Saxon and guests for Quuquuatsa: Speaking Our Own Language, to learn about the Indigenous Language Mentorship course at the University of Victoria, which connects language learners with fluent-speaking Elders. In the inspiring setting of the Our Living Languages exhibition, students, language learners and language activists will share insights and success stories about language revitalization.
Inspired by Wildlife Photographer of the Year, on now at the Royal BC Museum, the Photography Workshop for Adults, offered both March 19 and 20, will provide participants with the opportunity to hone their shutter skills with 2015 Rising Star Portfolio winner Connor Stefanison. All participants need to bring is their photography gear, a lunch and creativity for this all-day workshop. Tickets are $45 per person, per day.
Are you interested in using the BC Archives to research genealogy, heritage or other fields of historical research? On March 20, from 2 – 3:30 p.m., senior staff members from the Royal BC Museum and Archives will help get you started with The Mighty AtoM in Action! A Demonstration of the BC Archives Access to Memory Database.
Presenters from several divisions – including archivists, librarians and information systems analysts – will explain why they selected AtoM to replace the previous search interface; how the AtoM installation is designed and structured; and how AtoM searches provide access to a huge database of archival maps, photographs, moving images, sound recordings, and textual records.
March’s Wonder Sunday, from 1 – 3 p.m., asks the question- How do food stores and farms get started? And if you were to design your own food store or farm, what would it look like? While creating your own ideas, meet community members that have had inventive ideas about food production and are seeing these ideas through. It’s all about design, big ideas and creating something wonderful together. Sponsored by Quality Foods.
