COMING UP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA LEGACY ART GALLERY DOWNTOWN

Public celebration of "Fog God" at Legacy

Emerging Through the Fog is an exhibition about two Nuu-chah-nulth men, "Fog-God" Art Thompson (Tsa-qwa-supp) from Ditidaht (1948-2003) and Hjalmer Wenstob (Tlehpik) from Tla-o-qui-aht. On March 30, the anniversary of the death of Tsa-qwa-supp, the University of Victoria's Legacy Art Gallery Downtown will hold a celebratory event honoring Tsa-qwa-supp and his visiting family.

Emerging Through the Fog features the prints and paintings of Tsa-qwa-supp from the collection of Legacy Art Galleries and interactive carvings by contemporary artist Tlehpik, which were inspired by the work of his teacher and friend Tsa-qwa-supp. When Tsa-qwa-supp visited the young Tlehpik, it was always by emerging from the fog. Tsa-qwa-supp taught for many years and inspired a number of artists who also acknowledge the role of this respected teacher.

The welcoming celebration begins at 5:20 p.m. on March 30 and the evening will include the sharing of food and company.

This is a project of the Williams Legacy Chair in Modern and Contemporary Art of the Pacific Northwest.

Where: Legacy Art Gallery Downtown, 630 Yates St., Victoria
