A symposium exploring participatory approaches to museum collecting
Dear Museum Colleague,
You are invited to join the Museum of Vancouver, along with its partners, the Burnaby Village Museum, Richmond Museum, and Vancouver Maritime Museum, to participate in a two-day symposium through which we will explore the role of community participation in Collection Planning.
When: November 8th and 9th 2016
Where: Museum of Vancouver, 1100 Chestnut St.
Day 1: Is a collection planning laboratory. Who will be there? Thirty representatives of Vancouver community based organizations and thirty museum professionals. Keynote speaker, Jim Gardner, is co-author of The AAM Guide to Collections Planning and the Executive for Legislative Archives, Presidential Libraries, and Museum Services for the National Archives of the United States. He will lead community participants through an exercise resulting in the generation of themes that will help guide MOV's collecting directions and priorities. Museum professionals will observe this process to assess the value and challenges associated with a participatory approach to collecting planning.
Day 2: Who will be there? The same thirty museum professionals who attended Day 1. We will begin the day with a debriefing of Day 1, with participants sharing their thoughts on the previous day's workshop. Facilitated group discussions on collection planning and how it applies to participants' respective institutions will follow.
Legacy? A free online publication will be produced to share with the larger museum community the observations and proposed approaches to community input in collection planning discussed at the symposium.
The organizing committee is excited to pilot this collection planning community consultation process. We hope you can take part in this exploration with us.
Registration Cost: $50* (includes refreshments and lunch) - places are limited!
