EXPERIENCE A DAY OF ARTS IN PORT COQUITLAM ON OCT. 1

Celebrate Culture Days in Port Coquitlam at an Open House on Sat Oct. 1 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm at 2253 Leigh Square. The festivities include a variety of hands-on activities, performances, free exhibits and demonstrations by local artists and light refreshments and snacks.

Schedule of Activities and Exhibitions

Diwali Fest - an Arts Trade Fair, with demonstrations, performances, face painting, henna, and Rangoli art activities.

Transcendence: Golden Eagle Festival Bayan Ulgii, Mongolia Exhibit by Brendan O'Leary in the Michael Wright Art Gallery reveals rarely seen photos of the Eagle Festival in in western Mongolia which fosters the preservation of Kazakh traditions and the conservation of the golden eagles. Although these photos are set in Mongolia, the subject matter, Eagles are transcendent, revered by cultures around the world including North America's First Nations.

Fall Artist in Residence, Dawn Livera will be unveiling her community banner project. During her residency she will work with Port Coquitlam residents to create a handwoven banner with the theme The Gifts of Community. Throughout the event Dawn will also be completing short interactive demonstrations on freestyle weaving.

Carol Moffatt, long time Port Coquitlam resident and recently retire Sewing and Jewelry Making Teacher and Creative Guide at Wilson Centre will be sharing her Mindful Messages pieces, which are a culmination of her three interests: using ordinary in extra ordinary ways, her love of words and their power to shift, and her love of Yoga teachings and practices.

Kim Dinh will be displaying her handmade traditional Vietnamese lanterns which are used in the annual Vietnamese mid-autumn moon festival. The traditional lanterns are made with bamboo frames and paper coverings and the shapes and colors are limited only by the artist's imagination.

Sarah Ronald, Port Coquitlam artist will be working on a mixed media piece titled Travel Patterns, a series of 25 10"x10" panels exploring the movements of animals and herself through many of the neighbourhoods where she has lived. When finished the piece will be included in her solo exhibition in Deep Cove in February 2017 which examines how wild and suburban animals are impacted by humans.

Laura G. and Ninna Snider (The Muck Sisters) will be creating and selling their famous pottery items at the event. Laura and Ninna recently spent six months mucking it up at the Gathering Place during their art residencies. The Muck Sisters both bring their own unique skills making fun mixes of functional, fun, and whimsical work.


Culture Days features free, interactive events for the public, with the aim of engaging Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their community.


Leigh Square Community Arts Village encourages and facilitates community development through arts, culture and heritage within Port Coquitlam and serves as a cultural meeting place, a 21st century community arts centre.
