The Bowen Island Museum & Archives is looking for a temporary, full-time
student to work as an  Assistant Museum Curator! 

 

The Museum Assistant will assist the Museum Curator with the summer exhibit,
management of the collection, general curatorial duties and complete three
summer projects.  

 

1. Summer exhibit. The student will work with the Curator to research and
write text for labels, assist with the exhibit opening, write newspaper
articles and media posts about the summer exhibit. And work with the Curator
to dismantle current exhibit and install summer exhibit. 

 

2. Collections inventory. The student will inventory the artifacts to assist
Collections Committee identify duplicate objects, objects needing
conservation and verify that objects have been added to PastPerfect
database. 

 

3. Canada's 150th Anniversary community project. The student will work
cooperatively with other organizations to create a community heritage summer
exhibit.

 

As well the Museum Assistant will take part in the following activities:

 

*         Assist with museum special events - summer 50th Anniversary
exhibit opening, the Annual General Meeting, and the Bowen Island Museum &
Archives Revitalization celebration 

*         Assist with day-to-day organization operations including opening
and closing museum and archives 

*         Assist with marketing of exhibitions and events including writing
press releases, producing & distributing marketing materials and doing
social media outreach

*         Answer the phone, greet visitors, receive artifact and archival
donations, answer questions by visitors, gift shop sale

*         Any other duties as required by the position 

 

 

The Museum & Archives is looking for an employee for 40 hours a week. The
student will be supervised by the Archivist and Curator 5 days per week with
professionals and volunteers available for ongoing guidance and support. 

The employee will receive hands-on job training in archival work. The
employee will also be given some time to explore archival and historical
materials independently to become familiar with Bowen Island history and
with our facilities. 

 

The completion of an introduction to museum studies course or experience
working in a Canadian heritage/memory institution (archives, library,
museum, historical society) is desirable but not necessary. 

 

Candidates must confirm they meet the YCW eligibility criteria to be
considered for the position.

 

*         Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee
status in Canada;

*         Are legally entitled to work in Canada; 

*         Are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

*         Meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you are
applying;

*         Are registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;

*         Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

*         Do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while
employed with YCW;

*         Have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational
institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job;

*         Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following
the YCW job.

Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting
permanent status are not eligible.

Bowen Island is located just west of Horseshoe Bay, 20 minutes by ferry.
Ideally the job is 40 hours per week for four months. 

 

The salary is $14.25 per hour. The successful candidate should be able to
work independently. Ideally the four-month term will begin in May and run to
the end of August.
