Lewis , I can relate to your dilemma, and I have felt your pain. After our
fire in 2011 which left us the unenviable task of rebuilding from the bare
bones of our building. It will be 6 years since this catastrophe and I have
dealt with the same issue since taking up my post as Curator here.
When I assumed my position in May of 2013 my "job" was to curate a museum
with damaged artifacts in storage, a gallery which was empty and a budget
of.....well pretty well nothing. Our community has a population of 2500 and
insurance did not cover the entire cost of the necessary repairs and
reconstruction. We had no collection insurance.
I have begged borrowed and not quite stolen what I can......but mostly
begging.
But this is what I have come up with to display one of our prized pieces ,
a silk gown circa 1900's that had been through a fire sustained smoke and
fire damage and had been subjected to ozone treatments. It will not
tolerate another move so it had to be well protected.

Another dress which is on permanent loan and display is an 1896 wedding
gown . This one is in much more stable condition and is displayed in an
alcove. My first choice was to have it displayed on an an antique dress
form , which we had use of but only temporary. It is now suspended on the
same dress hanger style as the black one and hung on a stand built by one
of our volunteers. The handsome gentleman in this picture is the groom in
the photo when the dress was worn a second time in 1951.

Perhaps this helps a bit.
Warm regards,
Diana
