[BCMA] HAMM reopens at the Mews

Here is some NEWS FROM THE MUSE IN THE MEWS!

"The HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial (HAMM) will be reopening its museum in a totally renovated former warehouse and service station in downtown Courtenay, BC.

HAMM was given an eviction notice from the new owners of the Comox Mall effective the end of September.  Since then it has been a scramble to not only find an affordable facility, but also keep the Museum in the Comox Valley.  Luck would have it that the owners of "625" (Formerly called the Courtenay Mall) approached the HAMM director, Lewis Bartholomew, with an offer to lease their long empty warehouse space in their mews.

Since local municipal grants were not awarded to us as we had expected, the entire cost to renovate the new facility fell on the shoulders of many of our local visitors and on the director's shoulders as well to pay for the $12,000 renovation.

HAMM has dropped from 3000 sq/ft down to 1250 sq/ft so we will be reinventing ourselves using off site exhibit spaces, more on line displays viewable through the use of QR codes and life broadcast/pod cast programming. Most of our bi-lingual content will also be moved on line and accessible through visitors' personal smart phone or readers soon to be available at our front desk.  It is joked that we have now become the Tardis.  We will be much bigger on the inside.

Opening day is 16 January at 10:00 am.  HAMM returns to its usual winter schedule the following week.

Yes, after exactly 4 months since HAMM closed its doors in Comox, we now have a spectacular new facility and a new community (Courtenay) in which to thrive."
