*Executive Director/Curator (Fulltime)*

*Cranbrook, BC*

The Cranbrook History Centre is seeking an experienced, energetic, and
visionary museum professional to help lead the organization through the
next chapter of its exciting organizational transformation.

Founded in 1976 as the Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Foundation,
in 1993 the Centre was re-branded as the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel,
and in 2015, as the Cranbrook History Centre, reflecting an updated mission
and a new, revitalized, more community-focused, and more inclusive mission.
The institution’s mandate includes the research, preservation, and
interpretation of objects and archival records that pertain to the multiple
histories and perspectives of the people of Cranbrook and surrounding area,
including the role of the railroad rail travel.

The Centre comprises several distinct and important organizational
components.

·         *Canadian Museum of Rail Travel *consists of 28 railway cars, 17
of which are currently available for public tours. The railway car
collection is complemented a spectacular working model railway, immensely
popular with hobbyists and children.

·         *Cranbrook Museum* celebrates the rich heritage and cultural
characteristics of Cranbrook and the East Kootenay region. The History
Gallery showcases topics of local history and folklore, natural history,
paleontology, and Ktunaxa First Nation traditions.

·         *Natural History Gallery*, still in development, will encourage
appreciation in the magnificent natural environment.

·         *Royal Alexandra Hall* is located at the Centre and the Hall
seats over 200 people for programs and rental events.

For the right individual, this is an opportunity to help lead and solidify
the transformation of The Cranbrook History Centre from a local historical
museum to a major cultural organization in the BC interior.

*Responsibilities and Needed Skills*

*1.                   **General Duties*

•     Manage and conduct the daily business of the Cranbrook History Centre

•     Represent the Centre in a professional manner to all community
partners and stakeholders

·         Manage the facility, equipment, exhibits and collections.

•     Supervise general maintenance and repair projects.

·         Within funding limits, pursue continuing professional development



*2.       **Program Management*

·         Develop and implement programming and exhibits

·         Receiving agent for all exhibits, shows, events and programs
delivered.

*3.       **Collections Management*

•     Oversee sound collection management practices, including storage,
cataloguing, handling         preservation, and conservation

•     Coordinate new acquisitions and the de-accession for approval by the
Board



*4.       **Fund Raising*

·         Generate revenue through memberships, fundraising and grants

•     Establish, and maintain positive collaboration with community and
Centre members, current   and potential donors, businesses, agencies and
other organizations

·         Identify and apply for grants, solicit donations and stewardship
events

·         Work to sustain and increase individual and business memberships



5.       *Community relationships and Public Relations*

  •     Engage in public relations and active outreach, and serve as the
Centre’s chief ambassador.

  •     Co-ordinate media releases, public relations, quarterly newsletter,
web site, and social media



*6.       **Financial Management*

·         With the Treasurer, develop an operating and capital budget

·         Properly maintain all financial records

·         Ensure professionalism and timeliness in all financial
transactions and payroll

·         Develops a 5-year plan with the Board and implement accordingly.



*7.          **Relationship with the Board*

·         Serve as a trusted and knowledgeable professional advisor to the
Board

·         Record and file all meeting minutes

*Required Qualifications*

·         Master’s degree University degree from an accredited institution,
preferably in Museum studies, or the equivalent in other education and
experience

·         Minimum 3-5 years in a museum-related management position, with
demonstrated supervisor experience


*Skills*

•     Thorough knowledge of widely accepted best practices and ethics for
museums, as promulgated by ICOM, the Canadian Museums Association, BC
Museums Association, and elsewhere

•     Thorough knowledge of widely accepted best practices business
management, marketing, and accounting

•     Proficiency in windows-based applications (Outlook, Word, Excel,
Access, Publisher)

·         Working Knowledge of the history of Cranbrook and East Kootenay
Region and/or the sincere desire to learn more will be considered an asset

•     Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service

•     Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, externally,
internally, and with the Board

•     Demonstrated organizational, problem- solving and time-management
skills

•     Ability to work in a multi-task, collaborative and team-based
environment

·         Ability to lead, motivate, and coach staff and volunteers

•     Highly self-motivated and goal-driven, able to independently

·         Opportunities for development and career progression
