Hello Wendy,
We just purchased a piece of plexi for our new William Lesile Wing sign which is about 3' x 6'. The cost, to also have Industrial Plastics drill the needed mounting holes, was $200. We also had to have a thicker piece as it is being set out from the archway wall (not suspended).
However in your situation you should be able to get by with much thinner pieces of plexi or acrylic for weight and cost factor. Since you have a large expanse to cover, have you considered doing something a bit "artistic" and hanging narrower clear panels in front of it, with some of them being either in front of or behind the one next to it and over lapping by ½ inch or so. IE: Not trying to actually make the clear covering look like one piece, but instead looking more like large clear louvers. In a 70" span you could hang three narrower panels that when combined hang 80" wide to give you a bit more "security factor" edge. The two panels at the edges would hang slightly in front, and also allow air to flow into the central part of the map as well as from the edges.
I've seen this technique used a few times in museum to sneeze guard textile art, clothing, or delicate pieces.
And remember, NEVER use any kind of standard window cleaner such as Windex on Plexi/acrylic panels, or display boxes. The ammonia, after time, will make the Plexi brittle or cracklely. Use a plexi cleaner from an industrial plastics company.
at your service,

> I have a 1967 school type map of Greece that needs protection from fingers. The velvet rope is far from perfect!
>
> I have tried to get a piece of glass or plexiglass but apparently neither comes in the right size which is 70" x 70". At least not from Island Plastics. I would mount it in front of the map where it hangs on the wall so air can circulate.
>
> Another suggestion was to copy/photograph and store the original but the real value of the map is in the person of the previous owner- the map in itself is not particularly valuable and a copy just won't work.
>
> A recommendation is to use acetate over Mylar as supplied by "grafixplastics" which is only available wholesale. Michaels apparently carries it and I will go have a chat with them.
>
> Any other suggestions or referals gratefully received
