*New Funds for Museum Jobs*
*OTTAWA, Ontario, June 16, 2017* — The Canadian Museums Association (CMA)
is excited to announce that the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of
Canadian Heritage recently approved supplemental funding of $3,360,000 for
summer jobs and internships. The new federal financial contribution enables
the CMA to deliver 200 additional Young Canada Works in Heritage
Organizations (YCW-HO) summer jobs and 154 Young Canada Works at Building
Careers in Heritage (YCW-BCH) internships in 2017 – 2018.
The CMA would like to thank Canadian Heritage for the additional funding
provided for museum jobs. This support will help museums provide employment
opportunities for young students and graduates in the heritage sector.
“Young Canada Works in Heritage is an incredibly successful program which
provides meaningful training for young people and helps museums with their
vital work. This increase in funding will help not just with summer jobs
but will be a major boost to internship programs in museums,” said John G.
McAvity, executive director of the CMA. “We are very pleased the Minister
has recognized these opportunities and has responded so positively.”
The CMA has consistently advocated for the strengthening of the Young
Canada Works (YCW) program in museums. A key recommendation of the CMA to
political parties, during the 2015 federal elections, was an increased
investment of $5 million per year in the Young Canada Works in Heritage
program, to stimulate job creation in the heritage sector.
