Endangered species go on tour to northeastern BC
VICTORIA, BC-The Royal BC Museum's travelling exhibition Species at Risk is back on the road for a third summer. After visiting the Okanagan in 2015 and the Kootenays in 2016, this pop-up display is now venturing to northeastern BC and, for the first time, crossing over briefly into the Yukon.
Two friendly and knowledgeable interpreters are taking the teardrop trailer into communities where they will work with local partners to share information about species that are at risk of extinction or extirpation (no longer found in a particular area but still found elsewhere).
Four new hands-on displays, called mini-museums, will accompany the trailer. These mini-museums feature species from northeastern BC-Woodlands Cariboo, Hotwater Physa (an invertebrate that only lives in Liard Hot Springs), River Jewelwing (a type of dragonfly) and the Slender Gentian (a plant). These will be left with Peace River North School District 60, where local groups can borrow them throughout the year.
"Our touring exhibition celebrates BC as a biodiversity superpower," says CEO Prof. Jack Lohman. "It points to the importance of scientific collaboration across Canada and North America as critical to our future."
The exhibition highlights the plight of BC's most vulnerable flora and fauna, emphasizing positive (and easy) ways we can help our non-human neighbours. Species at Risk events are free (or included with admission to special events) and open to the public, all of whom are invited to visit, explore, learn and exchange knowledge about environmental stewardship.
Species at Risk will be on the Royal BC Museum grounds for its send-off on Saturday, July 1.
