Beat the heat at the Royal BC Museum this June
VICTORIA, BC–This June the Royal BC Museum has themed programs around three exciting events: the opening of the new cutting-edge Family: Bonds & Belonging feature exhibition, National Aboriginal Day and World Oceans Day.
Summer hours are in effect now until October 7. On Fridays and Saturdays the Royal BC Museum is open until 10:00 pm (closing at 5:00 pm Sunday to Thursday). The Food Truck Festival behind the museum is open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays (closing at 6:00 pm Sunday to Thursday), until September 4.
The Royal BC Museum’s newest feature exhibition, Family: Bonds & Belonging<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/exhibitions/family>, opens June 2. Explore rarely seen treasures, albums, portraits and costumes. Dive into the exhibition’s central question: can you pick your family, or is it determined by blood?
Pull up a chair at the family table as we launch our newest book, The Language of Family<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104332/book-launch-language-family>, on June 2 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in Newcombe Conference Hall. Hear readings from a selection of the authors, poets, cultural luminaries and curators who contributed to this book. Admission is by donation.
Haven’t seen the Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/exhibitions/terryfox> feature exhibition yet? Explore the story of a young man who inspired a nation 37 years ago, and established himself as a hero through his courage, hope and determination.
Another piece of Canadian history, Helmcken House<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104237/helmcken-house>, one of the oldest houses in BC still on its original site, is open for the summer between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Admission is by donation.
Feel like a little fiddle music? On June 3 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am come to Music at the Museum<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104229/music-museum> and listen to two youth fiddle groups, the Calgary Fiddlers and Coastline. Included with museum admission or membership.
Two families that can trace their lineage back to the gold rush are the subjects of our monthly lunchtime lecture. Curator of History Dr. Tzu-I Chung will present the next Live @ Lunch: Generations of British Columbia Families<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104005/live-lunch-generations-british-columbia-families> on June 7 from noon to 1:00 pm. Admission is by donation.
Another lunchtime event will take place on June 8, World Oceans Day, from noon to 1:00 pm: That's Debatable: a Curatorial Showdown on World Oceans Day<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/103979/thats-debatable-curatorial-showdown-world-oceans-day>. Will you be Team Vertebrate or Team Invertebrate? Included with admission or membership.
Can’t make it into the museum on World Oceans Day? Join Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants’ Google Hangout<http://www.exploringbytheseat.com/oceans> featuring scientists from around the world, including the Royal BC Museum’s Dr. Gavin Hanke from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm and Dr. Henry Choong from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
Our popular storytelling series Have We Got a Story to Tell—Family Feud<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104079/have-we-got-story-tell%E2%80%94family-feud> takes place on June 9 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The focus this month is on those tales of family drama that many of us can relate to. It is included with admission or membership.
Prefer to dive in and share your own perspective? Come to our new discussion series Food for Thought- The Culture of Nature<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104222/food-thought-culture-nature> on June 10 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Enjoy an afternoon of conversation with the Nature Conservancy of Canada exploring how we balance our relationships with the natural world. Included with admission or membership.
The Royal BC Museum is honoured to host Aboriginal Tourism BC’s Aboriginal Cultural Festival 2017<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104235/aboriginal-cultural-festival-2017>. From June 16 to 18 come to the plaza in front of the museum from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm to see more than 100 performers, browse the Indigenous Arts Marketplace and enjoy tasty treats from food trucks. Celebrate Aboriginal culture, values, language and cuisine. Adding to the excitement this year are special guests from the Maori performing arts group He Waka Kōtuia. This outdoor event is free.
After spending the day at the Aboriginal Cultural Festival, stay the Night at the Museum<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/103978/night-museum> on June 17 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 am on June 18. Tickets are $80 per person (10 percent member discount). Explore the newest feature exhibition, Family: Bonds and Belonging, after hours. Tell stories, watch home movies, play board games and even have a pillow fight (or two!).
To honour National Aboriginal Day, come to the next instalment of the new discussion series, It's Complicated: Repatriation<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/103982/its-complicated-repatriation>, on June 21 from 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm. This free event will discuss how the repatriation of First Nations belongings can affect a family, a community and nations.
Interested in finding your family history but don’t know where to start? Come to the Archives Workshop: Researching Family History<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104137/archives-workshop-researching-family-history> on June 24 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in Newcombe Conference Hall. Tickets are $30.
Head over to Willows Beach in Oak Bay for our ever-popular Fieldtrippers: In-Seine<http://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/104075/fieldtrippers-seine> event on June 25 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. Researchers from the Royal BC Museum will show you sea creatures like fish, crabs, shrimp and other invertebrates (animals without backbones). This event is by donation. Please leave dogs at home.
