Kelowna Centennial Museum
Celebrating the History of Ukrainians in Canada
Over 120 People attended the opening event, which featured music, dancing and fashion shows from the Dolyna Ukrainian Cultural Society.
"Bread and salt represent the gifts of the earth that give us life."
— Peter Bihun, Dolyna Ukrainian Cultural Society
The Kelowna Museums Society has partnered with the Royal BC Museum and Kelowna's Dolyna Ukrainian Cultural Society to present Bread and Salt. The Exhibition marks the 126th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada and the contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to BC and the nation.
The story begins with the arrival of the first Ukrainians in Canada on September 7, 1891, and leads the visitor through the early years of the settlement and hard work to experiences of war and internment. The Exhibition also highlights the ongoing contributions of Ukrainians to British Columbia and the continuing celebration of Ukrainians traditions. Over 80 objects on loan from the Dolyna Ukrainian Cultural Society are on display.
Bread and Salt runs from October 12, 2017 to January 27, 2018 at the Okanagan Heritage Museum.
Dolyna is a registered non-profit organization that teaches Ukrainian dance and culture weekly to people aged 4 to adult here in the Okanagan Valley.
