Colleagues,

The AABC is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 2-day
workshop "Understanding Copyright for Archivists" that will be held
November 8-9, 2017 in Vancouver, BC.

This two-day workshop provides background information and interactive
practical applications enabling archivists to apply sound copyright
practice in day-to-day activities. The workshop demystifies this complex
subject with an introduction to some underlying general principles about
how copyright law works and also includes detailed presentation of
provisions of the Canadian *Copyright Act* that are directly related to the
activities of archival institutions in the Digital Environment. The most
recent changes to the law are highlighted and there is discussion of the
obligations and rights of both copyright owners and users. Practical
strategies are introduced to enable archivists to comply with the
complexities of copyright law while carrying out professional
responsibilities. Interactive practical case studies consolidate and move
copyright principles and provisions into real-life practice.

The workshop will be led by Nancy Marrelli who is Archivist Emerita at
Concordia University in Montreal and Archivist of the emerging
Italian-Canadian Archives of Quebec. Nancy has published extensively on
archival topics and various aspects of Montreal history. She has been a
speaker at a wide variety of workshops and conferences across Canada, the
United States, and elsewhere. She is the Special Advisor on Copyright for
the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council of Archives and she
participates in copyright committee work within the Canadian library and
museum communities. She gives a series of webinars and workshops in
English and French on copyright for the Canadian Council of Archives.
