Cannery Speakers’ Series September 23rd – River’s End Fisher Poets

RICHMOND, BC – On Saturday, September 23rd, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society presents the fourth and final program in its summer Speakers’ Series with River’s End Fisher Poets<http://gulfofgeorgiacannery.org/events/pull-of-the-net-speakers-series-fisher-poets-afternoon>. This is the second year the Fisher Poets will gather in Steveston at the Cannery. Commercial fishers and others with connections to the fishing industry will share poetry, prose, and songs, celebrating the commercial fishing lifestyle.

Lead poet and event organizer, Wilfred Wilson, was inspired by the Astoria FisherPoets Gathering in Oregon on the mouth of the Columbia River. Wilson is a commercial fisherman and poet of Musqueam descent who has been fishing for over 55 years. He has been writing poetry for nearly as long. His works share the excitement of a great catch, the disappointment of an empty net, the allure of the sea, and the longing for home experienced during his fishing career.

The free event will be held in the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site’s Boiler House Theatre on Saturday September 23rd from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Seating is limited. Light refreshments will be provided. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.
The Pull of the Net Speakers’ Series is a recipient of the City of Richmond’s Canada 150 grant initiative. Richmond Canada 150 ignites the passions of the citizens of Richmond in a multi-faceted, year-long celebration, honours Richmond’s distinct and vibrant cultural diversity, and leaves lasting legacies that foster civic pride and carry the spirit of 150 into the future.
