Dogbane "Indian Hemp" Rope Making Workshop

Location: Meet at Marshall Fields (near tennis courts), 6891 Okanagan Landing Road

Have you ever wanted to know how to make your own rope? Join Syilx artist and teacher Ruby Alexis on October 1st from 11:00am-12:30pm for the Traditional Syilx Dogbane Rope Making Workshop. This Vernon Museum Field School event will include sourcing and picking the dogbane, preparing the fibre, and making the rope. Rope made from Dogbane, a plant which grows freely in the Okanagan, was created and used by the Syilx people for many purposes, especially fishing nets, and then became a popular trade item with the early fur traders as it was renowned for its durability and strength. It was often referred to as 'Indian Hemp."
