Indigenous Gallery Intern
Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art
October 3, 2017 - March 9, 2018 (22 weeks)
Tuesday - Friday, 9:30 am - 5pm - 7.5 hours per day
$18.00 per hour
The mission of the Bill Reid Gallery (BRG) is to reveal the vital and diverse indigenous cultures of the Northwest Coast through the extraordinary work of Bill Reid and inspirational contemporary art. We acknowledge that the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art is located on traditional unceded Indigenous territories of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil Waututh peoples.
Job description:
The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art (BRG) is seeking an Indigenous Gallery Intern to assist with planning and implementation of an exciting series of public programs, as well as preparations for an important gallery renovation project.
Under guidance of the BRG Curator, the Indigenous Gallery Intern will project manage this series of public programs. The Intern will contact artists and other presenters, prepare schedules and budgets, work with staff to create marketing materials, distribute social media listings, coordinate and facilitate actual events, and do other related tasks as required.
For the Renovation project, the intern will work with the Director + CEO on planning and preparation for the move, and with the BRG Curator and other staff for the physical implementation. The Intern will work in a team setting, prepare written proposals and reports, prepare schedules, become familiar with the budget, help to source the required supplies and services, do inventories, track collections in the database, and develop skills in handling and packing artifacts.
The Intern must be able to work independently, be organized and detailed oriented and will perform other related duties as required.
Skills required
This position is suited for students with Indigenous ancestry in the field of history, First Nations studies, art history, anthropology, museum studies, or curatorial studies. Knowledge of Northwest Coast art and culture, Indigenous contemporary issues and protocol is essential.
To meet the Young Canada Works program requirements, you must be a recent college or university graduate (within 24 months) and under the age of 30.
Advanced level of computer literacy including spreadsheets, Office, email, social media is essential.
Knowledge of PastPerfect database is an asset.
Must be fluent in English, knowledge of an Indigenous language would be an asset.
