SUMMER STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT
The Haida Gwaii Museum is seeing one post-secondary student to assist in Collections. The successful candidate will work closely with the Collections Manager in caring for collections, exhibition installation and maintenance, tours/interpretation, and a variety of other tasks. The position runs May 7 through August 24, 2018. Wage is $ 16.00 per hour for 35 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant will be a hard-working, dynamic self-starter who works well independently and in a team environment. They will bring good research skills, a high degree of computer literacy, an ability to maintain accuracy, effective interpersonal and organizational skills, and excellent written and spoken English language skills. The successful candidate must be physically able to lift and move heavy items. They will have:
. A demonstrated knowledge of basic Haida language, art and culture.
. A demonstrated interest in both the historic and contemporary cultures and territories of First Nations of the Pacific Northwest, in particular the Haida Nation and Haida Gwaii.
. A demonstrated interest in Indigenous practices, scholarship, and law as they pertain to arts and heritage management and museology.
. Cultural knowledge gained through learning from Indigenous Nation/Community knowledge-keepers
. Have been or will be enrolled in post-secondary courses pertinent to historic and contemporary Indigenous arts and heritage, such as: First Nations studies, archaeology, anthropology, museology, First Nations art history, Indigenous and Canadian history.
. Some experience in collection management and/or museum experience.
. An interest in pursuing a career in museums or archives.
The position is open only to applicants between the ages of 15 and 30, who have attended school full time last year and intend to return to school full time next year. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. All qualified applicants with disabilities, visible minorities are encouraged to apply for the position. Preference will be given to qualified candidates of Haida ancestry.
