The New Westminster Museum and Archives is seeking an Exhibit Technician to support the design, maintenance and fabrication of exhibitions at the New Westminster Museum in Anvil Centre, Irving House and the Samson V as well as various outreach locations in New Westminster. This is skilled technical work involving the design, construction and installation of a variety of exhibitions and displays. The work of this position involves artefact mounting, carpentry, cabinet making, painting, finishing and similarly related tasks as well as the installation and basic troubleshooting of information and computer technology in exhibitions and displays. As a pivotal member of the New Westminster Museum exhibitions team the successful candidate should possess technical drawing skills, have an eye for shape and colour and be able to think three dimensionally.
Our ideal candidate has:
* A Diploma in design, theatre design and production, or related field, and/or one or more trades relevant to the work, plus sound related experience in display and exhibition work. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may be considered.
* A proven history in the care, handling and exhibition of artefacts, natural history specimens and artworks.
* The capability to read and work from blueprints and rough sketches with considerable knowledge of the techniques, materials and methods used in two and three dimensional exhibit display work.
* Skill in the related trades such as painting, metal-working, carpentry, cabinet making involving the use and care of a wide variety of hand and power tools and materials such as glass, plastics, metals, and wood relative to the construction, development, and fabrication of exhibitions and displays while exercising safety precautions and awareness of hazards involved in the work.
* Sound analytical skills and be able to respond quickly and deliver effective solutions.
* Exceptional relationship building skills in the ability to quickly establish credibility, trust, and presence.
* Strong oral and written communication skills.
* A drive to perform under pressure and schedule and estimate time and materials to meet tight deadlines for exhibition timelines and budgets.
* The ability to guide contractors and volunteers.
* A track record of sourcing, installing, and maintaining, and troubleshooting computer hardware and software in museum and art exhibitions and displays.
* A Firearms Possession/Acquisition License or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
* The ability to perform the physical duties related to the work, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
* The ability to pass and maintain a Police Information Check.
* The ability to work non-standard hours as operationally required.
*This position works a non-standard work schedule as operationally required, including weekends and evenings.
