FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nanaimo Museum

A Feature Exhibit for Children at the Nanaimo Museum

Everyone loves a special occasion - be it India's Diwali, the New Year in China, the Jewish celebration Hanukkah, Toonik Tyme in Iqaluit or Canada Day. The Nanaimo Museum's fall feature exhibit, Kids Celebrate!, is a travelling exhibition from the Canadian Museum of History.

Kids Celebrate! invites children ages 5 to 12 to learn about the many celebrations that are practiced in their own communities. "The hands-on activities provide a great opportunity for generations of families to visit the museum together," says Aimee Greenaway, Curator at the Nanaimo Museum. "The exhibit is designed to engage curious young visitors."

The exhibition is divided into four zones, each evoking a different season, family and community setting. Children can learn more about the many celebrations that Canadians enjoy throughout the year - from food, music, decorations and games, to the values of giving, sharing and hope for the future.

Kids Celebrate! Saturdays will focus on specific celebrations or traditions. On September 29th, children can participate in Culture Days with the Sounds of Celebration theme - filling the gallery with noise using DIY instruments and an On Beat Bingo game. October 27th will feature our annual Haunted Coal mine and a spooky selfie station. November 10th is the fifth day of Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. Children can try their hand at creating rangoli-inspired chalk art, colourful designs traditionally created at the front door during this festival. Admission to Kids Celebrate! Saturdays is by donation, and all activities are available from 11am - 3pm.

Kids Celebrate! runs from September 12 to November 24. The Nanaimo Museum is open 10am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. For more information please call 250 753-1821 or visit www.nanaimomuseum.ca. The museum is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
