Hello, Museum-world,
It's random question time! Do any of you know of logging arches in any
museum collections in Canada? Or, are you aware of them having been used in
your area, even if you don't happen to have one in your collection?
Logging arches, also called Michigan Wheels, Big Wheels, katydids, and a
host of variations, are essentially horse-drawn log skidders - two 10'
wheels with a massive axle and a pole to hitch the horses to. We have one,
and I know of maybe a couple dozen others - all in the US. I'm trying to get
some idea of just how widespread they were and how many might still exist.
Here's a photo of ours, just in case my highly-technical description doesn't
actually give you any idea what I'm talking about:
Thanks!
Tammy
