March straight into nature this spring with the Royal BC Museum
VICTORIA, BC-This March, venture outdoors for mammoth walks and outdoor photography. Learn more about ecosystems around you with programs on native and invasive species and the plants of Northern BC. Get an insider's look at research taking place at the Royal BC Museum, which is helping us better understand the nature and history of this province.
Enjoy the fresh spring air at Island View Beach on our Fieldtrippers: Mammoth Walk<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105888/fieldtripper-mammoth-walk> on Saturday, March 3. From 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm join curator of archaeology Grant Keddie for a look at a local place where mammoth remains and other Ice Age discoveries have been made. Boots or old shoes are a must. Inaccessible for wheelchairs and walkers. Ages five and up. Approximately a two kilometre walk. Bring water and snacks. By donation.
The theme of our weekly family event for the month of March is Wonder Sunday: Animals of Nature<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105130/wonder-sunday-animals-nature>. Join us from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (March 4, 11, 18, 25) to learn which animals are native to Vancouver Island and which came from somewhere else. Discover what you can do to protect the environment from the unintended consequences of introducing an invasive species.
Unearth mysteries in plant distribution, see rare plants, find out what a pseudoflower is and discover the power of DNA markers at curator of botany Dr. Ken Marr's Live at Lunch talk on New Plant Discoveries from the Northern BC Alpine<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105161/live-lunch-new-plant-discoveries-northern-bc-alpine>. Admission to this event is by donation. It takes place in Newcombe Conference Hall on Wednesday, March 7 from noon to 1:00 pm.

Research Day takes place in Newcombe Conference Hall on Thursday, March 15 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; session one, Biodiversity Past to Present, is from 10:15 am to 11:45 am; session two, BC Journeys: Cultural and Economic Perspectives in BC History, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm; and session three, Indigenous Heritage and Reconciliation, is from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Are you an animal lover? Come to Stories at Helmcken House<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105910/stories-helmcken-house>, our monthly storytelling series, to hear folktales, myths, legends and personal stories of animals of nature. This event is on Saturday, March 17 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Admission is by donation.
Looking for the perfect spring break activity for your aspiring shutterbugs? Sign them up for Spring Break Camp<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105442/spring-break-camps> at the Royal BC Museum where they can develop their skills in this photography-themed week. Spring Break Camps run March 19 to March 23, 2018 and March 26 to March 30, 2018 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (before and after camp care is available from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm). Spring Break Camp is $280 per person; 10 per cent discount for members.
Don't worry: kids don't get all the fun. We've also got a Photo Camp for Adults<https://royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/visit/events/calendar/event/105814/photo-camp-adults> so you can unleash your inner wildlife photographer. Learn from Shane Lighter, Royal BC Museum staff photographer and Sam Rose Phillips, professional wildlife photographer. This day-long workshop is suitable for beginners to advanced intermediates. You will spend time in the classroom and in the field, so dress appropriately and bring your camera. The workshop takes place from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 24. Tickets are $45 per person; 10 per cent discount for members. Please note that lunch is not included.
