Grants 101: An Information Session

WHEN: Thursday, February 1, 2018; 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
COST: Free

Join Douglas Durand, part of the grant team at Vancouver Cultural Services, and Walter Quan, a program officer at the British Columbia Arts Council,  for an information session about applying for grants. Between them, they have more than a half a century of experience in writing submissions,  assisting applicants, adjudicating grants, and sending out results (good and ‘bad’). Learn tips and pitfalls and hear some ‘war stories’ as well. Register soon; this free session is filling up quickly.

Principles of Digital Marketing for Arts

WHEN: Wednesday, March 14, 2018; 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
 COST: $45 members | $85 non-members | $25.00 livestream

In this introductory workshop, digital arts marketer Brian Paterson, of Murray Paterson Marketing Group (MPMG), demystifies the diverse world of online marketing. Taking a highly practical approach, he will outline the tools that offer arts and culture organizations the highest returns; explore case studies that highlight best practices and sound strategies; and equip participants with working knowledge to start planning their own campaigns. Platforms covered will include Search Advertising via Google Grants, Google Display Network, and Facebook Advertising.

At MPMG, Paterson provides digital marketing expertise to organizations including Bard on the Beach, PuSh International Festival for the Performing Arts, Eastside Culture Crawl, and Vancouver Folk Music Festival, among others.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Arts Leading The Way

WHEN: Wednesday, February 21, 2018; 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
COST: $45 members | $85 non-members | $25 livestream

What can we do to ensure that diverse voices and perspectives are authentically included and expressed in the arts? How can we work within our sector to become leaders on the road to justice and equality?
Workshop participants will deconstruct cultural biases, critically examine systemic barriers, and gain a more empathetic understanding of issues faced by people of underrepresented identities. Participants will discuss strategies to implement culturally competent and inclusive practices within the arts sector.   

A musician and activist of Afro-Caribbean and European descent, facilitator Naomi Cromwell has developed and lead initiatives with organizations such as The National Music Centre, UNITY Charity, Selkirk College and BC Touring Council. 

Digital Records Management in Three Steps: A Guide for Small Organizations 

WHEN: Wednesday, March 28, 2018; 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
 COST: $45 members | $85 non-members | $25.00 livestream 

How many times has your organization had to deal with the loss of time, money and energy dealing with inconsistent filing systems on a shared server? Are you unsure of your existing records policies or wondering if you should write one? You’re not alone. This workshop will introduce the concepts of records management that can be most easily implemented at your organization. Delivered through a condensed curriculum developed with the support of the University of British Columbia’s Records Department, participants will learn the three key practices for managing a content system that, when implemented, stays organized, even through staff turnover.  

Facilitator Rhiannon Herbert has engaged with various collections and archives at the University of Saskatchewan, McGill University, the Art and Heritage Centre of McGill's Centre de Sante, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, VIVO Media Arts Centre, the Vancouver Police Museum, and others. She currently works as the outreach and database coordinator for the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture.

All workshops take place at the BC Alliance for Arts + Culture, located at 100-938 Howe St., Vancouver.
