January 25, 2018 - Sidney, BC on W̱SÁNEĆ Nations/Coast Salish Indigenous
Territory
In follow up to our recently circulated media release about our Coast
Salish Legacy Project (re-attached) - we are very pleased to announce that
the first public artwork was installed yesterday in Beacon Park at the
oceanside end of our Centre, January 25, 2018!
The work *The Salish Sea* by Tsartlip Nation artist Chris Paul, is now in
its permanent resting place as a key Coast Salish Indigenous marker. The 10
ft tall naturally oxidizing (rusting) iron metal sculpture features the
thunderbird in the Salish sky standing on the orca whale with salmon and
herring below - is now available for all of the public to see.
The piece looks remarkable in place (please find photos attached) and I
encourage everyone to see it, take pictures and share #salishsea,
#salishseaart, #salishseaChrisPaul and #salishseacentre - it is stopping
people in their tracks already as they walk along the walkway. Signage for
inside the centre and a permanent plaque for beside the piece is in
progress.
The signage will thank all of our supporters of the project, but I would
especially like to thank the Board and Staff at the Centre for their
original vision and efforts, Knappett Projects (John, Pete and the entire
team) for the full in-kind installation of the artwork, RJC Engineers (Leon
and team), the Province of British Columbia for major funding and
validation of our Centre and the project, Town of Sidney for funding and
technical support, and finally Chris Paul (http://chrispaul.ca/chris/
chris1.htm) for this beautiful Coast Salish expression of the precarious
life-cycle of the Salish Sea - we are honoured you have shared your story
and that it leads to much awareness, knowledge and learning, exploration,
and conservation.
